Response from the girl in the picture: FYI: Europeans are not the only race with natural blond hair. Melanesians are an ethnic group from Melanesia, an island around Australia, and what is amazing about them is that they are the only dark skinned people in the entire world to naturally have blond hair! I am very aware of my race and ethnicity and deeply rooted in my culture. My hair is not only a fashion statement, but a statement of pride and passion for who I am.

^^^^ That woman”s response is wonderful, I hear some crazy ish from some dreadheads to others like anti coloring, anti cutting, anti styling. Half the time they do not know the diversity of dreadlocks. They just know Jamaica, Bob Marley, and pro blackness. People in Ghana, Zimbabwe, and other countries wear dreadlocks with color (from mud, berries, flowers, etc) and cut them in certain styles to signify their culture. IMO the black western privilege blankets many minds and we never truly know what’s out there. It’s 2013 people if you can sit on tumblr, facebook, and instagram all day you can take an hour or two to look up various black skinned people from around the world with dreadlocks.

Society tells black women that their natural hair is undesirable, so they alter it to fit “accepted” standards. A white person with dreads is doing it because they think they look cool, there is no societal pressure on them to choose to wear their hair that way.

Second, who are you to say that it’s okay to take from another culture because “they’re meant to be shared”? Are you a member of that culture? Do you understand what it means to that culture?
